A stolen hour

I should be in the library studying Economics right now but I just can't make myself. It is ripping-my-hair-out boring and after an hour I just said feck it, I'm killing the next hour in the computor room instead. Here I am people!

I had a very nice looong weekend (Monday was bank holiday). Celebrating the end of the week I met up with some friends in the Pav (Pavilion Bar on campus) and had a "Druid and Ribena" (curious Irish drink consisting of cider and blackcurrant juice, maybe a bit sweet, but overall tasty). We had a laugh and some gossip and it all ended up with us me and Hanna getting invited to three dinners in the following days. We had a good few hours at the Pav, and when I got up, it was subsequently about 4 o'clock in the afternoon, the world was spinning slightly. On the way back Hanna, me and Brian took a swing by Dunnes (supermarket) and had an improportionally good time. I'm never doing grocery shopping sober again! (joke haha, mum)
The evening was calm, as Fridays tend to be here. We just hung out and watched Borat (Very Niiice!) and ate ice cream. Not to bad of a way to spend an evening really.

Saturday morning I spent studying and catching up in Sociology. We are reading about gender which is really interesting (anyone surpriced?).
In the afternoon me and Hanna made a little excursion to Dundrum (the BIG shoppingcenter just two luas stops away). We had a very important task before us: Getting Halloween costumes! I have been thinking and thinking about what to wear, anything from Indian to zombie really, but in Pennies (where else?) it finally occured to me. I was standing in the cue to pay and then I saw it; the perfect costume. A pair of guys briefs (kalsonger), blue with white stars. Two minutes later I found a red top and voila Superwoman!! I will show you pictures later (find them on Facebook!). Tomorrow's the day and I'm really excited. There are bout seven TCD Halloween parties to chose from. Quite tricky to have everyone go to the same one though.

In the evening I was invited to Nina (a Finish friends, yes the Scandinavians stick together like glue) and she made amazing spinnage pancakes. My appartement was empty since all the Irish go home over the weekend so I had some friends over for a couple of drinks. Then off to Whealand's! My old favourite and it was just as good as I remembered it. We danced like crazy people and my neck hurt terribly on Sunday from all the headbanging. Naomi and Fia joined up and they seemed to enjoy themselves equally.

Sunday held a sleep-in (needed) and then some hung-over hangout with friends in the morning. Conor was over from Germany this weekend so we met up in town for a catch-up and a chat. I thought it would be weirder than it was meeting up with him, we haven't seen eachother since Christmas after all, but it was really nice.
Me and Hanna were invited to dinner at an English friend's place in the evening. His name is Hector (I just had to wright that) and we had chicken. Nice with a bit of meet to compliment my almost entirely vegetarian diet.
In the evening a couple of us went to the cinema and saw Stardust. I'd never heard of it but it was really good! Such a nice story, fairytalelike and with Robert de Niro as a pirate wearing a dress. What more can you ask for?
Forgetting Sunday times we missed the last luas and had to walk the whole way home which took over an hour, but we managed to have a rather nice time anyways. And there's no such thing as a bit of fresh air ain't that right?

Monday held more studying than I might have wished for but I got a fair bit done anyways. A quite boring day with nothing more excition than a visit to Tesco. In the evening we went to Pranishe's house for dinner and had a nice time with him and his rather random flatmates.

Now it's Tuesday and in a few minutes I'm off to soccerpractice. I can't wait! And then I'm off to dinner at Naomi and Fia's house. Quite nice prospects...

Recalling days of our life

I'm sitting in  a computer room in college with 24 minutes to kill before my Economics tutorial and I am trying to recall how I spent these last few days. It is a bit of a haze. There is so much going on, it takes a while to tap into the "what have I done"-mode in contrast of the "what do I have to do"-mode. But I'll do my best.

Monday I came home knackered after boxing practice. I was totaly determined I would not go out, not for any reason. It took about five minutes of persuation and I was in my boots and off again. Back into town. We had quite the nice travel into town actually. For one single reason: We found a ball. Yay! Never knew playing football on the Luas tracks could be such a winner, but I guess it was the game in combination with the life threatening thrill of.. I don't know running screaming off the track five minutes before the train was arriving. We are real adrenaline junkies all of us. Had quite a nice night after that aswell, allthough the thrill of Luas-ball was hard to top.

Tuesday held soccerpractice and a booz-free night for me, since we had our first game coming up on Wednesday.

the following morning i woke up feeling really, really shitty. Seems the Fresher's Flue finally caught up with me and with such a bad timing too! The day of the Game. Having promised and looked forward to playing I dran a liter of orange juice and decided nothing would keep me from my game.
the team left college at one (double bonus I missed boring French lecture) and headed off into the wild. As in Carlow, roughly two hours south-west of Dublin. We are a happy bunch, the team, so the time passed quickly. A little too quickly cause we arrived dreadfully late and only had five minutes for warm-up and tactics. This was the start of what was to be a rather terrible game, which I'd rather forget, but we lost 3-0. We played absolute rubbish and I'm bruised all over. On the positive side everyone showed great character and it was a lot of fun. I think we'll be much better for our next game, and I played 90 minutes which was reassuring.

I had some plans for the evening but i just went straight to bed and slept wonderfully until 7AM the next morning when the fire alarm went off. Fire exercise! I wasn't the only one cursing while walking (in my pyjama) to the sport's hall. In Halls we have no secrets anymore, everyone knows what you sleep in, and what your hair looks like in the brisk morning sun.

In the evening me and Hanna hosted a little soiree with some friends. We made left-overs in tomato sause and it was actually really tasty! Brian brought wonderfull apple pie, Conor brought wine and Cormac brought cider, which made quite a nice meal. Hanna, Conor, Cormac and I met up with Naomi at the Celt and had a lovely night over Cashel's pints and many laughs.

Five minutes to my Economics tutorial and then the weekend lies ahead. It's a bank holiday weekend so we have Monday off aswell.. happy days! I think I might hit the cinema tonight.. mmm

Written on a Friday

Dear diary,

It's been a while since I wrote last and that can be explained only by the lack of time I'm experiencing at the moment. As you know I love being busy and keeping occupied, and thus I am not too anxious about my current situation, the truth is though that I am glad the weekend's here so that I can enjoy some much deserved rest.

This week has held much leisure but also a fair bit of work. My tutorials have begun and I must admit that even though they only amount to four extra hours they made the week a fair bit busier. I am also struggling to keep up with the reading; it is not too hard, it's just quite a lot and it takes time. Time is precious.

As I mentioned before it's been quite a lovely week despite the fleeing time.

On Sunday the sun was shining bright and I felt I needed a brake from the city's hazzle and noise. Hanna and I took the opportunity to take the Dart out to Howth. We enjoyed a lovely excursion and some exercise and after a brisk climb we enjoyed a succulent picnic on the hilltop gazing out over the rough Irish sea.

Monday held a bit of an indoor party (as in not leaving the house) with my housemates, something we have all come to enjoy sincerely. But it was Tuesday which held the event we've all been waiting for: The Freshers Ball. It wasn't a formal gathering in the sense that a gown was required, but it was an amazing party at Tripod, a top Dublin venue, with amazing bands and a great TCD crowd. I enjoyed it thoroughly, even though the pre-party was almost as good with our whole bunch in house 80.

Even though I was not too spunky on Wednesday I was still in a sari. Actually a quite nice costume for my friends birthday fancy-dress party. I had a bindi and everything. That night wasn't too heavy though since the Warden broke up the party at 23.15. I wasn't that sad about it to be honest...

Yesterday was a Thursday and what is a Thursday without a pint at the Celt? Before heading out though, me and Henry, an English friend, actually hosted a small dinner for some friends form here. I made an exquisite broccoli gratin and Henry performed magic with chicken. Succulent!

Today held something very special. I don't know if you are familiar with Ian Paisley but over here you wouldn't find anyone who doesn't know who he is. He is the first minister of Northern Ireland and quite an outspoken unionist (not a big fan of the Republic of Ireland that is). Well, he was speaking at Trinity which is quite a big thing since he's only set foot in the Republic twice before. And I was there! It was all thanks to Clare (my roommate) who got lucky and got a ticket in the draw (demand not equal to supply), but she couldn't go so I got her ticket. It was really interesting although I thought it would be a little more bloodshed (figuratively speaking of course), everyone was remarkably civil. But as the bloke beside me stated: "These are new times. If this was held a couple of years ago there would surely be at least one bomb in the room." Don't be scared parents; the security was rigorous, Ian Paisley even brought his own crew of life guards (there were more than 10 of them).

As a contrast, afterwards I went to the Pav (College bar) and met up with a whole bunch of my friends. It's funny we haven't even known each other a month, we get along great. Speaking of great: Things in general are great. Great, great, great! Great.

Have a great time now friends!

Patterns

It doesn't take very long in a new place before you start to make out some future "patterns" for what it's gonna be like. Take my schedule for example; It onlu took one week to make out that I'm gonna hate Thursdays. I'm in at nine and have one tutorial and then four lectures in a row including Math & Stat and two hours of Economics in the same lecture theatre.. mon dieu! And that's just before lunch...But that'll probably be the day I hang at the Pav (Pavilion Bar, college pub, right y the sports fields) and catch up with the classmates over cheap cans of beer.

That's roughly how this Thursday looked anyway. But I had an extra soccer practice too (so much fun!!!) and then I met up with Hanna at the Pav, had a few cans with some engineering students and then headed over to meet up with Naomi and Fia at the Celt for the usual Thursday pint and music. A pint later Hanna and I decided to go to a student party at th Citi Bar. Really good fun appart from two things: 1. The music. Irish clubs still play Vengaboys and Sean (da) Paul. 2. Two euro tequila (well it was great fun at the time but waking up for my Math & Stat class Friday morning wasn't pleasurable). After getting a bit sick of lemon and salt we headed over to appartement 14 in house 30 of Trinity Halls, cause that's where it's all happening apparantly (atleast we keep ending up there).

Friday held a non wanted morning but I got up and actually kept awake and on my toes the whole of my one lecture. Then I went and bought the Economics book which broke my heart and dug a deep hole in my wallet. It did make up for it a bit in the first chapter though, which I spent most of the day reading, where I learnt that: "The opportunity cost of more goods and services in the future is less consumption today." Which in extent means: Buy and read the bloody book and you'll earn loads of money in the future (ain't that right Hugo and Bengan?). It better keep what it promises cause it was darn expensive!

In the afternoon I had an hour with my precious little sister before she returned to the land of our ancestors (eh, Sweden that is). We had a lovely time over giant Mocha mugs on Starbuck's (her treat) and discussed all things homey. It was quite sad to say good bye (eventhough we are killer e-mail wrighters) I wont see her til Christmas.

I had a big task to performe on Friday aswell. An ancient task. I had to get food. Empty, empty cupboards equalls empty, empty stomach, didn't have to study Math to figure that out. So I went to Tesco and did some major shoping. Draging home vegetables, fruit and tins for a whole week almost killed me though, much more work than the boxing actually.

And then I had a dinner party for Naomi, Fia and Hanna. Made mum's famous lasagna and it was thuroughly apprecieted by the half starved student/ hostel habitants.

Very niiiice and then we watched movies in house 30 (surprisingly). I'm starting to see the pattern of who my friends will be too.

Love love love

Today I studied and Naomi came by.

The harsh reality

It's not all play and no work in College. In my second week reality hit me; kind of hard too. The first lectures were fine. Social studies, politics and even business are subjects I'm interested in and the lectures and the reading seems fine and not mountainiously hard. Today however I had my first lecture in Mathematics and  Statistict. I walked into the lecture theatre with the naive hope it would be a bit of charts and tables and hopefully not too hard. An hour later I was back in third year of high school, repeating equations and graphs; stuff I haven't done (and happily so) for one and a half years. Just finished my darn task for tomorrow's lecture and its 12 o'clock at night. Welcome to college I guess. Oh, and if that wasn't all I had my first French lecture too....

But good things happening aswell. I had my first soccer practice yesterday and it was great! So good to be back on the pitch and the practice went very well I dare say. Let it be that the standard isn't close to what I'm used to from IFK Lidingö but I really don't mind. The girls seem enthusiastic and nice and the coaches are relaxed with good skills. I think it will be fun. Next week's our first game (I think) so that's exciting. Furthermore I had my first boxing practice today. My body aches but it was something new. Feelt good too, fun, but now my body's aching. Good crowd and I hope I'll be able to keep up both soccer and boxing. If only there's time.

Also Linda was here visiting my crib. Really nice to have her over. Feels weird that she's in town and neither of us have time to see to much of eachother. Well, she got to see the flat and meet the mates so that's grand. I have to catch her tomorrow before they go back. Grasp that last little straw of home.. (hopefully my mum will be over at some stage before Christmas though).

Now I gotta crawl to bed. Got a rough day tomorrow with a good few lectures... gah! And soccer practice. But live life to the fullest isn't that what they say?

Trinity News

I can't believe it hasn't been more than just over a week in Halls. It feels like I've been living here for years. Apparently I'm not the only one thinking in those lines. Talked to a guy in Halls on the Luas today and he had spent the weekend back home (Drougheda) with his parents. When we reached the gates of Halls he sighed "oh, so good to be home." Really, I said, so where were you this weekend? There are quite a few us us being in a state of confusion; simply because it's so easy to like it here.

I haven't done much this weekend. Sleeping (needed) and hanging out with friends mainly. Time flyes here! I can't really put my finger on what exactly I've been doing but I guess hanging out would be the best guess. Socializing. Oh, and I got some boring stuff sorted, changed phone company, and I got my computer sorted and configured it to the TCD network (that stuff takes so mutch time!). Also I met up with my old West Coast Coffee bud Sophia. She's studying phsycology in UCD. Another one who couldn't leave this darn darling island. There are a few of us. I'm a bit nerveuse Naomi and Fia's parents will curse me the day they realize that they just love it to mutch here to go home. I have a feeling that day will come...

Met Linda today. She's over in Ireland with school. I only had five minutes to say hello and get my computer which she was kind enough to bring over. We'll catch up later in the week when they're in Dublin. I'll take them drinking.. maybe (I'm only joking mum, I would never introduce an 17 year old to alcohol, God no!).

There's another Swedish girl living in Halls and she's really nice. Hanna. She's here four years aswell and I think we will stick together. She already feels like something rather stabil in a new and rocking uni world. People keep saying they met their life long mates in uni and I can't help looking at people and wonder if they'll be my closest friends in the future. There are some applicants for that; but so many friends I have yet to meet. I haven't even met my classmates (all 210 of them, gah!).

Tomorrow I have my first lectures. This is when it starts for real. Haven't had time to get school supplies yet. I'll figure that out tomorrow I guess.

Everything is so darn exciting. But still I have to say: I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT... so far!!!!!!

Fresher's Week

What a week. I don't know where to start. Maybe on Monday. Or Sunday might be better: I went to a toga party and it was great fun. I didn't wanna use my one sheet or one towel as a toga so I improvised with a scarf. Hence a green toga; very faschionista.

Monday I went into College for the first time as an actual Trinity student and I was impressed. This week is Fresher's Week which basically means a lot of events, a lot of parties, a lot of free stuff and a lot of information. The whole of the front square was turned into a giant "fair" with stalls from all the different societies and sports clubs. There are a bunch of societies on different topics you can join. They're created for the students by the students and they house everything from parties to debates and from plays to volunteering oppurtunites, all depending on what you're interested in. I've joined loads, but that's kind of what you do: you try it out and stick with the ones you like. I've so far joined The Phil and The Hist (very old traditional debating societies, who basically houses everyting from movie stars to politicians), The One World Soc (Fare Trade and such), Players (Drama, they have a play in the college theatre at least once a week), The Trinity News (College Newspaper), The DUBES (for my course), DUISS (International Students Society), Tradsoc (for traditional music), the Political society and a few more.. thinking of joining the Japaneese society just for the sushi. For sports I joined the boxing club and I found a girls soccer team! Yay! First practice on Tuesday.

There have been so much going on, events here and there. I've been to debates, trad sessions, gay bar birthdays, free lunches, comedy shows and so much more. There have been concerts and speed dating and lectures and registrations and candy floss.... Tonight there's a play/game show on in the theatre, Hellen Miror (actress in the Queen) in the Hist, an Iron Stomach competition and a club night in the Phil. It's the chosing and the sleeping which are hard to master.

But my friends believe me when I say that this is darn fun. And in this second of my life I feel like this might have been the best choice I've ever made. There have and will be ups and downs, I'm very aware, but I'm pretty sure the high I'm on right now will last me a while. Especially since I feel I've made some really good friends over here.

I hope your well. Love you to pieces.
